What is a Herniated Disc?

Your spine is made up of bones called vertebrae. The vertebrae are small bones that stack on top of one another. Take a look at the example to your right. In between each vertebrae is a little cushion or “disc”. The discs job is to act like a shock absorber.

Think of a disc like a jelly doughnut. It has a firm outside with a soft gel inside. What often happens is the disc becomes damaged either over time through degenerative changes or as the result of trauma, such as a car accident. When the gel inside breaks through the outer lining of the disc its now considered to be a herniated disc.

This short video explains it really well.

Symptoms of a Herniated Disc.

The symptoms of a herniated disc are not always obvious, there are many people walking around with herniated discs that will never even know it. Symptoms could be as subtle as a dull ache in your back or as severe as not being able to stand up. For a complete explanation of herniated disc symptoms this article is worth a read.

Why does a herniated disc cause pain, numbness, tingling or burning?

It’s not the actual disc that causes your pain, its the pressure on the nerves that cause those sensations.

Between each vertebrae and behind each disc are nerves that spread out to the rest of your body. If any pressure is placed on these nerves it can be extremely uncomfortable and lead to sensations down the arms or legs, as well as burning, tingling, or pain.

When a disc herniates it can put pressure on theses nerves and cause that burning, tingling, stabbing, shooting discomfort that you may be experiencing.

How are herniated discs diagnosed?

Herniated discs are diagnosed with an MRI scan of the suspected area. There are many warning signs a Doctor will notice when taking your history and examining you, if a herniated disc is suspected they will confirm with an MRI. If an MRI is not an option(patients with metal implants) a CT scan can also be used to diagnose a herniated disc.
